Ukrainian President Zelensky Calls for Stronger Sanctions on Russia After Deadly Attack on Kyiv
In the wake of a tragic attack on Kyiv that left at least 31 people dead, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging the international community to impose tougher sanctions on Russia. Among the deceased were five children, with the youngest victim just two years old. The assault, which occurred on Thursday, also resulted in 159 injuries and significant damage to an apartment block, a hospital, a school, a nursery, and a university.
Zelensky emphasized the effectiveness of sanctions, stating, "No matter how much the Kremlin denies their effectiveness, sanctions do work – and they must be strengthened." In honor of the victims, Kyiv observed a day of mourning following the attack, which has been described as one of the deadliest since the onset of Russia’s large-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles during this overnight onslaught.
In the United States, President Donald Trump condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine and indicated that new sanctions against Moscow may be forthcoming. "I think it’s disgusting what they’re doing," Trump remarked to reporters. He also set a "10 or 12" day deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
John Kelley, the acting U.S. representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council on Thursday, stating that both Russia and Ukraine "must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace." He added, "It is time to make a deal." On Friday, Ukrainian officials reported receiving "positive signals" from the U.S. regarding potential new sanctions, particularly aimed at Russian oil and secondary markets.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha praised Trump for being "generous and patient" but stressed that "now is the time to put maximum pressure on Moscow." In a show of support, Germany announced plans to deliver two additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems in the coming days.
Zelensky highlighted the ongoing threat, noting that in July alone, Russia launched over 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and 260 missiles, including 128 ballistic missiles. "Every day matters," he asserted. "This can only be stopped through joint efforts – by America, Europe, and other global actors."
