Marcus Rashford Reflects on Manchester United’s Challenges Since Sir Alex Ferguson
Marcus Rashford has opened up about the struggles Manchester United has faced since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona, the forward expressed feeling "hurt" as both a fan and player during a recent podcast interview.
Rashford shared his insights, stating, “Successful teams have core principles that guide them. Any coach or player who joins should align with these principles or contribute positively to them.” He emphasized that while Manchester United once displayed a strong desire to win, their approach has become reactionary rather than strategic.
The 27-year-old noted, “When your direction constantly shifts, it becomes challenging to win the league.” Rashford, who scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United before his loan move to Aston Villa, believes the club must fully embrace a transition period to reclaim its former glory. This process may involve a temporary lack of silverware.
He remarked, “People often say we’ve been in a transition for years, but to transition, you need to actually begin the process. The real transition hasn’t started yet.” Drawing a parallel, Rashford referenced Liverpool’s journey under Jurgen Klopp, who faced initial struggles before leading the club to significant success. “To start a transition, you need a clear plan and the commitment to stick with it,” he added.
Rashford highlighted the challenges stemming from frequent managerial changes and shifting strategies, stating, “With so many different managers and ideas, we end up in a state of uncertainty.”
The impact of Rashford’s exit has prompted new manager Ruben Amorim to revamp the attack. Last season, United finished 15th in the league and fell short in their only opportunity for silverware, losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Amorim has made significant changes to the attacking lineup, bringing in players such as Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and Benjamin Sesko for £74 million from RB Leipzig, as he seeks to reignite Manchester United’s performance.
As the new season approaches, Manchester United fans are hopeful for a turnaround after last season’s struggle, which marked the club’s lowest points total in Premier League history. The team will kick off their campaign against Arsenal this Sunday at Old Trafford.
