Iga Swiatek’s Physiotherapist Responds to Criticism from Coco Gauff’s Ex-Coach Brad Gilbert After Wimbledon Win
Iga Swiatek’s recent triumph at Wimbledon has sparked controversy, particularly following comments made by Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Coco Gauff. Swiatek dominated the women’s final on Centre Court, winning decisively against Amanda Anisimova with a stunning score of 6-0, 6-0, marking one of the most lopsided finals in tennis history.
After the match, Gilbert took to social media, questioning Swiatek’s achievement by pointing out that the highest-ranked player she faced during the tournament was 12th-ranked Liudmila Samsonova. He remarked, "Crazy. Iga’s highest ranked opponent at this Wimbledon was Samsonova at 19 AA, ranked 12. Not sure when the last time someone won a slam without facing a top 10 player."
In response, Swiatek’s physiotherapist, Maciej Ryszczuk, defended her honor with a sharp retort on X (formerly Twitter): "It’s so low that even you can feel the bottom. Do your research better. Winning ugly doesn’t mean commenting ugly." His comments highlight the importance of recognizing an athlete’s hard work rather than undermining their achievements.
This victory is particularly significant for Swiatek, who had not won a tournament in 13 months prior to the final. She delivered an exceptional performance, leaving Anisimova struggling to keep up.
Reflecting on her win, Swiatek expressed her disbelief and gratitude, saying, "It seems super surreal. I want to congratulate Amanda for an amazing two weeks. No matter what happened, you should be proud of the work you are doing. I hope we are going to play many more finals and in other tournaments. You have the game for that."
Swiatek continued, "For me, this was way too far to dream about. I feel like I’m already an experienced player after winning the Slams before, but I never expected this one. My team believed in me more than I did." She also acknowledged the pressure of competing on Centre Court, stating, "Walking around here felt like a huge pressure, but this year I really enjoyed it and improved my game."
In a light-hearted moment, she recalled the sound of champagne bottles being opened during the match, a memory she will cherish.
On the other hand, Anisimova graciously acknowledged her opponent’s skill, saying, "You’re such an incredible player, it showed today. You’ve been an inspiration to me, an unbelievable athlete." She thanked her supporters and expressed her disappointment in her performance, admitting, "Even though I ran out of gas a bit today, I wish I could have put on a better performance."
This Wimbledon final has not only showcased Swiatek’s talent but also ignited discussions about sportsmanship and respect in the competitive world of tennis.
