Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell recently provided a vivid illustration of why NFL coaches typically aren’t mic’d up during games. Unlike other professional sports that feature live mic’d moments, the NFL often opts for a more controlled environment, mainly to avoid broadcasting colorful language. However, during the preseason, the Vikings’ broadcast team decided to give fans a behind-the-scenes look by mic’ing up O’Connell, which led to an unexpected moment when he dropped an F-bomb on live television.
During the third quarter of the Vikings’ game against the New England Patriots, O’Connell was featured on Fox 9 as he commented on a play. His excitement quickly turned to disappointment when he spotted an illegal motion penalty before the snap. "I’m excited about this year’s team and this play call, fellas," O’Connell began, but then exclaimed, "Oh no! F— … It’s coming back." His frustration was palpable as the play, which would have resulted in a first down, was nullified due to the penalty.
While it wasn’t the starting lineup on the field, O’Connell expects his team to maintain high standards regardless of who is playing. Ultimately, the Vikings fell to the Patriots, 20-12, in this matchup. Notably, the highly anticipated 2024 first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy, was sidelined again for this second preseason game. Despite his absence, McCarthy has impressed during training camp, especially during joint practices with the Patriots. After missing the entire 2024 season due to a meniscus tear, he’s looking to make his mark this year. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings to an impressive 14-3 record last season, is now the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.
As the season approaches, O’Connell hopes to keep the expletives to a minimum from the sidelines as he aims to lead the Vikings back to the playoffs. Stay updated on all things sports by following Fox News Digital on X and subscribing to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
