Passenger Train Derails in Bryansk Region, Russia: Seven Dead, Dozens Injured Following Bridge Collapse
A tragic train derailment in Russia’s Bryansk region has resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left 30 others injured, including two children. The incident occurred late Saturday night when a passenger train collided with a bridge that collapsed due to what local authorities described as “illegal interference.”
Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed the fatalities in a post on Telegram, sharing that the injured were promptly transported to medical facilities in the region, with two individuals reported to be in serious condition. Among the deceased is the train’s driver, as reported by Russian news agencies.
The bridge, which spanned above the railway tracks, gave way as the train was traveling from Klimov to Moscow. The derailment took place near the village of Vygonichi, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border. Emergency responders swiftly mobilized to search for passengers trapped inside the wreckage, and temporary accommodations have been established at a local school in Vygonichi.
Moscow Railway stated on Telegram that the bridge collapse was due to “illegal interference in the operation of transport,” but did not provide additional details. Meanwhile, the Baza Telegram channel, known for its connections to security services and law enforcement, suggested—without substantiating evidence—that the bridge may have been deliberately destroyed.
This incident comes amid ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with explosions having previously derailed multiple trains, primarily freight, in regions close to the Ukrainian border. In the wake of the bridge collapse, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that Ukrainian air defense units were engaged in repelling a Russian air assault on the capital. Earlier that day, Russian drone and missile strikes resulted in at least two fatalities in Ukraine.
Since the onset of Russia’s invasion three years ago, cross-border shelling, drone attacks, and covert operations have become commonplace in the border areas of Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod. In a recent development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for collaboration between Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate a peace agreement, while Russia has proposed a second round of in-person talks with Ukrainian officials in Istanbul next week. Ukraine has yet to confirm its participation, stating it requires clarity on Russian proposals first, while a prominent U.S. senator warned that Moscow would face severe repercussions with new sanctions.
