Taron Egerton Declines James Bond Role: Why He Believes He’s Not the Right Fit
Taron Egerton has officially ruled himself out of the running for the iconic role of James Bond, citing that he feels "too messy" to portray the suave super spy. As Amazon MGM Studios embarks on the quest for the next 007, the production team has enlisted acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman leading the way as producers.
At 35 years old, Egerton expressed his belief that he is not suited for the role in the post-Daniel Craig era. He emphasized the wealth of younger talent available to take on such a significant challenge. In a candid interview with Collider, the star of Kingsman: The Golden Circle stated, “I think I’m too messy for that. I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure, but I wouldn’t be good at it. There are so many cool, younger actors who would excel in the role. It would probably be wasted on me.”
Egerton further elaborated on the demanding nature of the Bond character, noting that it would be a considerable undertaking, especially at a time in his career when he is eager to explore diverse roles. “As far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it. But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest,” he remarked. “A role like that can consume your life.”
This isn’t the first time the Welsh actor has distanced himself from the Bond conversation. In a 2023 interview with The Daily Telegraph, he candidly shared, “You have to be consistently statuesque to be that guy, and that’s something that I am still striving for. I’ve always struggled with my weight.”
According to Variety, the buzz around potential candidates for the next Bond includes rising stars such as Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson, as Amazon MGM Studios curates its wishlist for the iconic role.
In a landscape filled with speculation and excitement about the future of James Bond, Egerton’s honesty and self-awareness shine through, leaving fans curious about who will ultimately don the tuxedo next.
