Steve Martin recently celebrated his milestone 80th birthday on August 14, and he commemorated the special day by filming a scene at Disneyland. During an appearance at the Television Academy’s Televerse festival on Saturday, Martin opened up about the significance of filming at that particular location on his birthday. “I shot a one-day scene at Disneyland on my birthday, and it was in the magic shop where I worked when I was 15,” he shared with the audience at an “Only Murders in the Building” Emmy FYC event. “I was standing in the exact spot where I stood at 15! It felt like going to work at 15 and then coming home from work at 80.”
While Martin didn’t disclose the specifics of his filming at Disneyland, it has been reported that Jon Favreau is currently working on his Disney+ series featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney’s original character before Mickey Mouse. This has led to speculation that Martin will indeed make a guest appearance in the “Oswald” series, as first hinted by the InSneider newsletter. The cast for the series includes Kathryn Hahn, Amy Sedaris, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ryder Allen. Favreau is set to serve as the writer, executive producer, and director, with production support from Walt Disney Studios.
At the Televerse event, Martin was joined by co-stars Martin Short (who participated via remote video) and Selena Gomez, along with executive producer and showrunner John Hoffman. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Detective Donna Williams in the series, moderated the panel discussion. When asked about Season 5, Hoffman teased, “We’re doing something new by pulling from the headlines of New York today. It’s very current, and we’re revisiting the theme of classic versus modern.”
In the upcoming season, viewers can expect a unique mafioso twist as Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), and Mabel (Gomez) delve into the organized crime underworld while investigating the mysterious death of Arconia doorman Lester. “We’re exploring the power dynamics in New York, which might reflect some of the broader issues facing the country,” Hoffman explained. “The season will highlight who holds power, who had it, and who might regain it, with our trio right in the middle of this intriguing narrative. We hope you enjoy the season, as we incorporate plenty of clever nods throughout.”
“Only Murders in the Building,” nominated for an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for its fourth season, will return for Season 5 on September 9 on Hulu. Don’t miss out on the fun as Martin, Short, and Gomez continue to unravel mysteries in their unique comedic style!
