Sophie Cunningham Hit by Flying Object During WNBA Game: A Look at Recent Incidents

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham experienced an unusual incident during Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks, as she was struck by a projectile sex toy. The event unfolded in the final minutes of the second quarter while the Fever prepared to inbound the ball. This marks the third occurrence of a green sex toy being thrown onto a WNBA court in recent weeks, highlighting a troubling trend.

The first incident occurred during a game in Atlanta on July 29, followed by another in Chicago on August 1. This latest event also made Cunningham a target on the very day she discussed the dangers of such incidents on her podcast.

During the podcast, Cunningham expressed her concerns about the potential consequences if a player were to be hit by one of these objects. She remarked, “I just know how things go viral now. If something like that came from the rafters and hit me in the face, I would be known for that for the rest of my life. It could even break a nose.”

To add a personal touch, Cunningham shared that her mother texted her a warning: “Instead of my usual good luck text, she said, ‘Watch out for flying dildos tonight.’”

Unfortunately for Cunningham and the Fever, the game ended in a 100-91 loss to the Sparks. Earlier that week, Cunningham had taken to X to urge fans to stop the disruptive behavior, stating, “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.” After the incident, she humorously reshared her previous post with the caption, “This did not age well.”

The antics have led to serious consequences, including arrests. Recently, the WNBA announced that a 23-year-old individual was taken into custody for throwing one of these objects onto the court. This individual faces multiple charges, including disorderly conduct and public indecency.

Delbert Carver was booked into Clayton County Jail in Georgia for the incident and has since been released on bond. The WNBA has made it clear that the safety of players, officials, and fans is a top priority. In a statement, they emphasized, “Objects thrown onto the court or in seating areas pose a safety risk. Fans who intentionally throw objects will be ejected and face a minimum one-year ban, along with possible arrest.”
