Marius Borg Høiby Faces Serious Legal Charges: A Closer Look

Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been charged with a staggering 32 offenses, including four counts of rape, according to a statement from the prosecutor. As the son of the crown princess and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon—Norway’s future king—Høiby is set to stand trial early next year. If convicted of the most severe charges, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

The charges, revealed on Monday, encompass allegations of raping four different women, domestic abuse towards a former partner, and unlawfully filming multiple women, including intimate areas, without their consent. Additionally, he faces charges related to harassment of police and various traffic violations.

Høiby’s defense attorney, Ellen Holager Andenæs, has been approached for comments regarding the case. In June, prior to the latest indictments, Høiby was already facing 23 charges, including three counts of rape. His defense lawyer at the time, Petar Sekulic, stated that Høiby “strongly denies” the rape allegations and does not plead guilty to the core accusations.

The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 2018 and November 2024, following consensual sexual encounters, during which the women were asleep. Høiby is accused of recording these assaults without the victims’ knowledge.

As the state attorney, Sturla Henriksbø, presented the indictment, he emphasized the gravity of the situation: “This case is very serious. Rape and violence in intimate relationships are heinous acts that can leave lasting scars and devastate lives.” He further asserted that Høiby’s royal connections would not influence the judicial process, ensuring he would be treated with the same level of scrutiny as any other individual facing similar charges.

The maximum penalty for the offenses outlined in the indictment stands at 10 years in prison. The state prosecutor has been deliberating over the charges for the past six weeks, and the trial is anticipated to commence in January, lasting approximately six weeks.

It’s important to note that Høiby does not hold a royal title and is not in the line of succession to the throne. The Norwegian royal court has stated, “It is for the courts to consider this matter and reach a decision. We have no further comment.”
