In thrilling news for fans of the Oscar-winning classic The Social Network, a sequel is finally gaining momentum. Acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is reportedly eyeing two rising stars to lead this highly anticipated follow-up. While details like the budget are still being finalized, insiders reveal that Sorkin’s top picks for the leading roles in The Social Network Part II are none other than Oscar-winner Mikey Madison and Emmy-winner Jeremy Allen White.
Although no formal offers have been extended to either actor yet, it’s clear that Sorkin envisions them in pivotal roles once production hurdles are cleared. Sony Pictures, the film’s distributor, has refrained from commenting on the casting news.
Deadline first broke the news in June that Sorkin would not only direct but also write the sequel after years of contemplating the direction for this next chapter in the Facebook saga. This new film is still in development with an impressive team of producers, including Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin himself, and Stuart Besser.
Unlike a traditional sequel, this film will serve as a follow-up to the original, delving deeper into the origins of Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform. Sorkin’s screenplay will draw inspiration from Jeff Horowitz’s explosive Wall Street Journal series, The Facebook Files, published in October 2021. These articles revealed the inner workings of Facebook and the various harms linked to its operations.
In this narrative, White is expected to portray Horowitz, while Madison is likely to take on the role of the whistleblower behind the groundbreaking articles. Following the announcement of the sequel, actors across Hollywood are eager to meet with Sorkin, knowing the remarkable opportunities presented by the original film’s star-studded ensemble.
As for the character of Mark Zuckerberg, it remains uncertain how significant a role the CEO of Meta will play in the sequel, and whether Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his Oscar-nominated role. Sources suggest that discussions regarding Eisenberg’s return are still ongoing.
Originally released in 2010 by Sony Pictures and based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, The Social Network became a massive hit, grossing $226 million worldwide and receiving eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The film ultimately won three Oscars, with Sorkin taking home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Since the film’s debut, Sorkin has expressed interest in a follow-up but struggled to find the right angle. However, the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol reignited his inspiration, leading him to believe that Facebook played a significant role in those events.
Sources emphasize that this new film will not solely focus on January 6 but will also explore the broader impact of Facebook on the 2020 election, as well as its influence on teens, preteens, violence, and global issues beyond the United States.
For Madison, this sequel would mark her first major studio role since her Oscar win for Anora, while White is also eyeing potential awards glory this fall as he prepares to portray rock legend Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.
