James Gunn Responds to Wonder Woman Casting Rumors Involving Adria Arjona
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, is addressing the buzz surrounding the potential casting of Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman in the upcoming DC Universe. In a recent interview with Extra, Gunn clarified the speculation that arose after he followed Arjona on social media. Fans quickly jumped to conclusions, believing that his action indicated she might be taking on the iconic superhero role.
“I follow Adria on Instagram, and everyone immediately said, ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,’” Gunn explained. “She’d be a fantastic Wonder Woman, by the way.” He further emphasized their longstanding friendship, noting, “We’ve known each other since she starred in a movie I directed seven years ago. I followed her back then; this isn’t a new thing.”
The film in question is the 2016 thriller The Belko Experiment, which featured Arjona and was both written and produced by Gunn, alongside his DC Studios partner, Peter Safran.
Earlier this year, when asked about fans speculating on her potential casting as Wonder Woman due to Gunn’s social media follow, Arjona expressed her admiration for him. “I love James Gunn,” she told CinemaBlend in April. “He gave me my first studio movie, so I owe him a lot.” When pressed about whether Gunn’s follow meant anything significant, she humorously crossed her fingers and replied, “I don’t know.”
If Arjona were to be cast, she would succeed Gal Gadot, who first portrayed Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and reprised the role in the solo Wonder Woman film (2017), as well as in Justice League (2017) and the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). Gadot also made appearances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) and The Flash (2023).
As the DC Universe evolves, it has already launched with the animated series Creature Commandos, and the first live-action film in the Chapter One: Gods and Monsters series, featuring David Corenswet as Superman, is set to hit theaters soon. Fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for the superhero franchise!
