In a recent interview, Ameen revealed that creating "Hijra" was no easy feat. "We filmed in remote cities and regions, but we firmly believed in the significance of sharing this story—one that highlights Saudi women from various generations against a backdrop of rich human and historical narratives," she explained.
A Journey of Discovery and Redemption
"Hijra" follows the poignant journey of 12-year-old Janna, who sets out on a pilgrimage to Mecca to perform Hajj alongside her strict grandmother, Sitti, and her rebellious 18-year-old sister, Sarah. However, their journey takes a dramatic turn when Sarah goes missing, prompting Janna and Sitti to embark on a tense and urgent search.
Fearing that Sarah’s father might discover the truth, Sitti and Janna push their limits to uncover the reasons behind Sarah’s disappearance. Their quest spans from the southern regions of Saudi Arabia to its northern borders, traversing ancient pilgrimage routes while confronting strangers, harsh landscapes, and long-buried family secrets.
As Janna and Sitti grow closer during their search, Janna begins to unveil the rich and complex stories of Sitti’s past. The quest for Sarah brings to light deep generational rifts within their family. As their arduous journey mirrors the spiritual challenges of Hajj, Janna and Sitti find something even more profound than reconciliation—redemption.
