Rebecca Romijn recently provided an exciting update on her return as Mystique in the highly anticipated film, Avengers: Doomsday. During an interview at The Hollywood Reporter’s suite at San Diego Comic-Con, the star of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds revealed that she is uncertain if she has completed her filming for the Marvel blockbuster, as the script is still a work in progress.
When asked about her shooting schedule, Romijn candidly admitted, “I’m not quite sure. The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest to maintain the element of surprise.”
Romijn also remained tight-lipped about whether she has read the entire script, stating, “I cannot confirm nor deny that I have read the entire script.” She did share that filming alongside some of her original X-Men co-stars in a new, blended cast felt “surreal.” “It was very surreal to be with my old cast as well as a new cast,” she reflected. “I had crazy dreams while I was there for a large chunk of shooting. My brain was really trying to process it all, thinking, wow, this is a character I played 25 years ago. Yeah, it was very surreal.”
Revisiting the role of Mystique after nearly two decades since her last portrayal in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand was a profound experience for Romijn. “Oh, I know her very well. I went back in with full ownership of her,” she explained. “It was wonderful to step back into that character. In the beginning, I struggled with imposter syndrome, wondering if I was cast just because I was a model available at that moment. But this time felt completely different. I had no doubts about my place in the role.”
Marvel unveiled the cast of Avengers: Doomsday in late March, featuring a remarkable lineup of actors from the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe. Joining Romijn are Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Additionally, Alan Cumming is returning as Nightcrawler, a role he last played in X2: X-Men United, along with Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as Beast from X-Men: The Last Stand.
