Quentin Tarantino Shares Insights on Passing Up Netflix’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Sequel

Quentin Tarantino recently shed light on his decision to decline directing the upcoming sequel to Netflix’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In an exciting announcement made in April, it was revealed that Brad Pitt will return to reprise his iconic role as Cliff Booth from the acclaimed 2019 film. However, in an unexpected twist, the renowned David Fincher has been chosen to direct the project instead of Tarantino.

During an episode of The Church of Tarantino podcast, the two-time Oscar winner explained that one of the primary reasons for stepping away from the sequel was his desire to ensure that his 10th film would not simply be a continuation of his earlier work. "I love this script, but I felt like I was retracing my steps," he stated. "It didn’t excite me as much. For my final movie, I want to explore new territory and challenge myself creatively."

Tarantino also expressed his admiration for Fincher, emphasizing that he believes both of them are among the best directors in the industry. He praised Fincher’s commitment to adapting his work, noting, "The fact that David Fincher wants to bring my vision to life speaks volumes about the seriousness he brings to the project."

Although Tarantino won’t be directing, he has contributed to the script and will serve as a producer, ensuring his presence throughout the production. "I’ll be moving between here and Israel, so I might not be on set every day. But I’m definitely available if they need me," he added.

In addition, Tarantino discussed his decision to shelve his previously planned final film, The Movie Critic, which was at one point considered as a TV series. "I genuinely liked the concept. I challenged myself to see if I could make the most mundane profession in the world—being a film critic—compelling," he explained. "Who would want to watch a show about a movie critic? If I could make that interesting, that would be a significant achievement."

He clarified that The Movie Critic was intended to be a "spiritual sequel" to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, emphasizing that there were no crossover characters, and Cliff Booth would not appear in the new project, despite speculation.

Stay tuned as Tarantino continues to shape the film industry with his unique vision, and keep an eye on the exciting developments surrounding the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel!
