Gus Poyet Predicts Title Contender and Issues Warning to Spurs’ New Boss Thomas Frank
Premier League legend Gus Poyet has identified a surprising title contender for the upcoming season, while also delivering a crucial message to Thomas Frank, the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder, who boasts nearly 200 appearances across both clubs, remains optimistic about their prospects in the 2023/24 season.
In a recent conversation with William Hill, the 57-year-old Poyet said, “Chelsea is riding high after winning the Conference League followed by the Club World Cup. This momentum is significant for the club and its new ownership.” He believes that the recent successes have given Chelsea’s manager the necessary confidence to push forward this season.
Poyet highlighted the impact of Chelsea’s new strikers, including Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, emphasizing that their contributions will be crucial this season. “With Cole Palmer looking to step up as well, Chelsea’s attacking options have expanded dramatically, making it an exciting time for the club,” he added.
He anticipates a strong start for Chelsea, aiming for at least a top-four finish. “If they can keep their key players healthy, we might witness a fierce title race involving three or even four teams. I don’t expect Liverpool, Arsenal, or Manchester City to ease off, so this season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory.”
Chelsea will kick off their season against Crystal Palace this Sunday.
On the flip side, Tottenham enjoyed a commanding 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Burnley in their Premier League opener, with Richarlison shining through with a remarkable performance, scoring twice, including a stunning volley. The Brazilian’s resurgence under Frank is gaining traction, and his transformation could be crucial for the new Spurs manager. Additionally, the arrival of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham adds further depth to the squad.
Frank’s competitive debut for Spurs came in the Super Cup against PSG, where, despite a 2-0 lead, Spurs ultimately fell short in a penalty shootout. Nevertheless, the performance was commendable, with PSG manager Luis Enrique acknowledging that his team “didn’t deserve that.”
Poyet recognizes the significant challenge Frank faces at Tottenham. “The league form last season was not up to standard, even considering the injuries,” Poyet remarked. “There needs to be improvement.” He expressed his respect for Frank’s coaching abilities, honed during his successful tenure at Brentford, and acknowledged the higher expectations now placed upon him at Spurs.
“Frank’s vision of an attractive style of play is commendable, but he will require support in the transfer market before the window closes. Tottenham must enhance their squad to compete effectively,” he warned.
Poyet expects Spurs to become a more formidable team, but stresses the importance of bolstering their lineup to secure a European spot. “They need to strengthen their wings and center forward position. However, I anticipate a notable improvement in their league performance this season, provided they make the right investments.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on both Chelsea and Tottenham to see if they can fulfill their potential in one of the most anticipated Premier League campaigns yet.
