As the Baltimore Orioles approach the trade deadline, Cedric Mullins is making a compelling case for teams looking for an exceptional player. The center fielder has consistently ranked among the best defensively in his position, and this week, he’s proving that he still has what it takes.
Mullins has showcased his skills with a series of impressive plays over the past few days. Notably, he made a spectacular diving catch against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, and just two days later, he robbed the Toronto Blue Jays of a three-run homer, contributing to a crucial win for Baltimore.
However, his most jaw-dropping moment came on Wednesday afternoon. With the Orioles trailing 5-4 in the sixth inning and a runner on second, Ali Sanchez stepped up to the plate. He launched a fly ball to center field, and Mullins was on the case. Scaling the center field wall for an extra boost, he leaped into the air, snatching the ball just before it could reach a fan’s hands. This incredible catch halted the Blue Jays’ rally, although they managed to score four runs in the next inning. Baltimore did retaliate with three runs of their own, but ultimately, they fell short, with the Blue Jays winning 9-8.
In a twist of fate, Seranthony Dominguez, who had just been traded from the Orioles to Toronto, struck out two of his former teammates in a standout performance.
As the Blue Jays now lead the American League East by 4.5 games, there’s speculation that this might have been Mullins’ last game in an Orioles jersey. In addition to Cedric Mullins, the Orioles also made moves by trading reliever Gregory Soto to the New York Mets and Bryan Baker to the Tampa Bay Rays.
