Martin Short Discusses the Future of Only Murders in the Building Beyond Season 5
Martin Short, the beloved star of Only Murders in the Building, recently shared his thoughts on the future of the hit series during an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. The show, which premiered on Hulu on August 31, 2021, has received widespread acclaim and continues to captivate audiences. The fourth season aired from August 27, 2024, to October 29, 2024, and just a month before the finale, Hulu announced the renewal for a fifth season.
When asked about the longevity of the series, Short, a two-time Emmy winner, candidly remarked, “I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time. I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years.” He drew parallels to iconic shows, stating, “The Dick Van Dyke Show ended after five years, partly because they were concerned about maintaining its quality. But then you have Friends, which ran for so long and was consistently brilliant.”
Short’s comments come on the heels of his fourth nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Only Murders in the Building. The show, co-created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, features Short alongside Martin and Selena Gomez, who plays Mabel Mora. The trio navigates the complexities of their Upper West Side apartment building, bonding over their mutual love for true-crime podcasts and solving a series of intriguing murders.
In the podcast, Short praised Only Murders in the Building, calling it a “great” show that is “well written, well directed, well crafted, and a hit.”
Fans can rejoice as Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building is set to premiere on Hulu on September 9, 2025, featuring 10 exciting episodes that promise to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
