Afternoon Box Office Update: Key Insights on Recent Releases
As we dive into this weekend’s box office numbers, New Line’s original horror film, Weapons, is experiencing a notable second-weekend decline of 49%, with projections indicating it will gross around $22 million after a second Friday tally of $6 million across 3,450 theaters. The film, directed, written, and produced by Zach Cregger, is on track to reach an impressive $86 million by Sunday.
In other news, Disney’s Freakier Friday has reported a second Friday gross of $4.5 million, suggesting a total weekend take between $14 million and $15 million from 3,975 locations. This represents a 48% decline, bringing its ten-day total to approximately $55 million. Notably, this figure is about 6% lower than the original Freaky Friday (2003), which concluded its theatrical run with $110.2 million.
Nobody 2, the highly anticipated sequel from Universal, is currently projected to open with $9.25 million, following a first Friday plus previews that garnered $3.8 million from 3,260 theaters. Meanwhile, Disney/Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four: First Steps has earned $2.3 million on its fourth Friday, with a predicted weekend total of $8 million, bringing its cumulative earnings to around $246.1 million.
In its third weekend, Bad Guys 2 from Uni/DreamWorks Animation has pulled in $5.7 million, a decline of 46%, totaling $55.4 million across 3,374 theaters. This is pacing about 3% behind the first Bad Guys film after 17 days.
Friday Morning Insights:
As summer winds down, the only major studio release this weekend is Universal’s Nobody 2, which earned $1.3 million in previews from 2,800 theaters starting at 2 p.m. The $25 million production from 87North is aiming for an opening weekend exceeding $10 million, while Weapons is expected to lead the pack with over $20 million.
Weapons has concluded its first week with a strong $64 million, which is 17% behind Sinners‘ opening week of $77.5 million, but 29% ahead of Get Out’s $49.8 million debut. The performance of Weapons in its second weekend will be telling, especially compared to Get Out’s 15% drop and Sinners‘ 5% dip. Notably, Sinners saw a 14% increase in its second Saturday, while Get Out experienced a 9% decrease.
On Thursday, Weapons earned $4.06 million, down 9% from Wednesday’s $4.4 million. The first Nobody film didn’t have previews due to the reopening of major cinemas in New York City and Los Angeles shortly before its release, which led to a $6.8 million opening and a final domestic gross of $27.5 million. In contrast, the previews for Nobody 2 align closely with Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves: Pantera, which earned $1.35 million on its Thursday before opening with $15 million.
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, with a screenplay by Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin, Nobody 2 is receiving positive reviews, boasting an impressive 82% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 92% from audiences—comparable to the first film’s 84% and 94%, respectively.
