David Byrne and Hayley Williams Collaborate on Netflix’s Animated Adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits

Exciting news for fans of David Byrne and Hayley Williams! The iconic frontman of Talking Heads and the talented Paramore lead singer have teamed up to contribute to the soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book, The Twits.

Byrne has crafted and produced three original songs for the film, performed by the cast. These tracks include “We’re Not Like Ev’ryone Else,” “Lullaby,” and “The Problem Is You.” Additionally, he collaborated with Williams on the poignant end title song, “Open the Door,” where they serve as co-writers and performers.

This adaptation, directed and co-written by Phil Johnston—known for his work on Ralph Breaks the Internet, Zootopia, and Wreck-It Ralph—marks a significant milestone as it brings Dahl’s classic characters, Mr. and Mrs. Twit, to life on screen for the first time. Johnston is joined by co-directors Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong, along with co-writer Meg Favreau, to bring this whimsical yet dark tale to audiences.

Mark your calendars! The film is set to premiere on October 17, and Netflix has also announced exciting new voice cast additions. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) and Ryan Lopez will voice the lead child characters, Beesha and Bubsy. They join an impressive lineup that includes Johnny Vegas and Margo Martindale as Mr. and Mrs. Twit, alongside Emilia Clarke (Pippa), Natalie Portman (Mary Muggle Wump), Timothy Simons (Marty Muggle-Wump), Nicole Byer (Beverly Onion), Jason Mantzoukas (Mayor Wayne John John-John), Alan Tudyk (Sweet Toed Toad), Mark Proksch (Horvis Dungle), Rebecca Wisocky (Dee Dumdie-Dungle), and Charlie Berens (Gorb Klurb).

Johnston has reimagined Dahl’s narrative, depicting the Twits as the owners of a hilariously grotesque amusement park called Twitlandia. When the Twits take control of their town, two brave kids—Beesha and Bubsy—along with a family of magical Muggle-Wumps, must outsmart them to save their community.

“This was a thrilling project,” Byrne commented. “Like many Roald Dahl stories, it features its fair share of dreadful characters, but there’s a unique charm in how kids (and adults) can safely explore their darker impulses through such a fun and punky narrative.” He added, “When I was approached to compose songs for this movie, I eagerly accepted. Phil was exceptionally clear about the emotions each song needed to convey.”

Byrne shared that the end title song, which he crafted with Williams, was inspired by Beesha—a kind-hearted, empathetic 12-year-old who stands in stark contrast to the vile Twits. “We wanted the song to reflect the heart and connection present in the story, especially after all the chaos caused by Mr. and Mrs. Twit,” he explained. “Hayley contributed some fantastic lyric ideas, and we brought them to life together.”

Williams expressed her excitement about being part of the project, calling it a “pinch-me” moment, particularly since The Twits was one of her favorite Dahl books as a child. “I’m fascinated by twisted characters like Mr. and Mrs. Twit, and I loved how Phil and Daisy adapted the story. It feels like a cautionary tale that also beautifully explores themes of chosen family and community—topics I’m passionate about. Collaborating with David on the music was a surreal and enjoyable experience,” she shared.

Johnston echoed this sentiment, saying, “Working with David has been a dream come true. I’ve admired him since I was 13, so to collaborate with him on this project has been an unforgettable experience. From the very first demo featuring a 100-year-old banjolele, I knew we were creating something special.”

The animation for The Twits is being produced by Jellyfish Pictures, known for their work on The Boss Baby and The Bad Guys. The film is produced by Johnston, Maggie Malone, and Daisy May West.

Stay tuned for more updates as we count down to the release of The Twits on Netflix!
