Nearly 200 Arrests Made in D.C. Amid Federal Crime Crackdown

In a significant development, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Friday that close to 200 arrests have been made in Washington, D.C., since the Trump administration took control of the city’s policing efforts to combat rising crime rates. As of Friday afternoon, the total number of arrests has reached 189, with the count still climbing.

Among those apprehended are two murder suspects, 17 individuals linked to drug trafficking, 39 suspected illegal gun offenders, and two sexual predators, according to Bondi. The crackdown has been bolstered by the involvement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has made 75 arrests as part of its collaboration with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

"This is what happens when we enforce the law," Bondi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "We’re taking back our Nation’s Capital! Together, we will make D.C. beautiful and safe again."

The federalization of the D.C. police force occurred under section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, granting the president emergency control for a 30-day period. This move has seen hundreds of National Guard members and federal agents—including those from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Capitol Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)—deployed throughout the city.

The intensified operations have resulted in nearly 50 arrests in a single night, including 29 individuals identified as illegal immigrants.

In a related move, Bondi rescinded sanctuary city protections in D.C. and appointed an "emergency police commissioner" to oversee the MPD. DEA Administrator Terry Cole will replace Metro Police Chief Pamela Smith, who faced criticism for policies that restricted cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Bondi’s initiative, titled "Restoring Safety and Security to the District of Columbia," aims to dismantle sanctuary policies and enhance the MPD’s engagement with immigration enforcement.
