Unbelievable Comeback: Rockies Defeat Pirates in a Historic 17-16 Thriller
The Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates played an unforgettable game at Coors Field on Friday, August 1, 2025, in what turned out to be one of the wildest contests of the MLB season. After falling behind 9-0 in the first inning, the Rockies staged an incredible comeback, ultimately walking off the Pirates with a stunning 17-16 victory.
The Pirates wasted no time as they pounced on Rockies’ starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela, scoring eight runs in the first inning with only two outs recorded. Center fielder Oneil Cruz delivered a key moment, smashing a grand slam that put the Pirates up 5-0 right out of the gate.
Rockies reliever Carson Palmquist stepped in for Senzatela, but his debut didn’t go as planned; he allowed a three-run homer to Andrew McCutchen, pushing the Pirates’ lead to 9-0. However, the Rockies began to chip away, scoring one run in the first and three runs in the third inning, cutting the score to 9-4. The Pirates added to their lead with three more runs in the fourth, making it 12-4, but the Rockies were far from finished. They managed to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the score to 12-6.
As the game progressed, the Pirates extended their lead to 15-6 after three runs in the fifth inning. Yet again, the Rockies responded with a four-run inning, narrowing the gap to 15-10. The Pirates added another run in the sixth, bringing the score to 16-10, and it seemed like the game was slipping away.
But the Rockies showed resilience, scoring two runs in the eighth inning to reduce the deficit to 16-12. The ninth inning marked the start of a thrilling comeback. Catcher Hunter Goodman ignited the rally with a solo home run against Pirates’ relief pitcher Dennis Santana, making the score 16-13. After a walk by left fielder Jordan Beck, first baseman Warming Bernabel hit a triple, scoring Beck and tightening the score to 16-14.
Second baseman Thairo Estrada followed up with a single, scoring Bernabel to bring the Rockies within one run at 16-15. With Estrada on base, center fielder Brenton Doyle stepped up and delivered the ultimate blow—a two-run walk-off home run that sealed the 17-16 victory for Colorado.
"I’m honestly speechless," Doyle said in a post-game interview. "It’s hard to put into words how proud I am of everyone in this clubhouse for never giving up. What a win!"
This historic victory marks the first time a team has won after allowing nine runs in the first inning since the Cleveland Indians accomplished the feat in 2006. Doyle reflected on the challenging start, stating, "Getting down nine in the first is tough, but we kept our energy high and never lost our fight. What a game!"
