Authorities Investigate Discrepancies in California Mother’s Account of Missing 7-Month-Old Son
The search continues for 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, who has been missing since August 14, as investigators express concerns over inconsistencies in his mother’s account of the alleged abduction. Rebecca Haro, Emmanuel’s mother, reported that she was assaulted outside a store in San Bernardino County, leading to the kidnapping of her infant. However, recent statements have raised questions about her credibility.
On Saturday, August 16, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) revealed that during interviews with multiple individuals, including Emmanuel’s parents, notable inconsistencies were found in Rebecca’s statements. Following these discrepancies, she opted to discontinue the interview process. This has led authorities to consider the possibility of foul play in Emmanuel’s disappearance.
Details of the Disappearance
Law enforcement first received a report of the missing infant around 7:47 p.m. on August 14. According to Rebecca Haro, she had taken her children to football practice with her husband, Jake Haro, before stopping at a Big 5 Sporting Goods store for a mouthguard. She claimed that after someone greeted her with "Hola," she became disoriented, and her baby went missing during the alleged assault.
Authorities quickly deployed K9 units for scent tracking; however, the infant was not found, and no suspect information has emerged. Notably, surveillance footage from the area did not capture the incident, and an Amber Alert was not issued due to the absence of specific suspect and vehicle descriptions, which failed to meet the activation criteria.
Parental Cooperation Under Scrutiny
Investigators have expressed frustration regarding the lack of cooperation from Emmanuel’s parents. They have reportedly declined to provide further information to law enforcement, complicating the investigation. Early on, the case garnered attention from advocacy groups, including the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, which initially offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to Emmanuel’s recovery. However, the foundation later withdrew support, citing concerns over the inconsistencies in the case and the mother’s sudden decision to halt communication with authorities.
Daniel Chapin, founder of the Uvalde Foundation, stated, "We cannot, in good conscience, utilize our team and resources when so much is missing in this case. What parent would stop cooperating if their child was missing? Something is not right."
Ongoing Search Efforts
The search for Emmanuel Haro remains active, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. He was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie, weighs approximately 21 pounds, stands about 24 inches tall, has brown hair, brown eyes, and is cross-eyed. The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has committed to finding him, emphasizing the importance of community assistance in their efforts.
