Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White Set to Star in Sony’s Sequel to The Social Network
Mikey Madison, who clinched the Best Actress Oscar this year for her stellar role in Anora, and Jeremy Allen White, a strong contender for his third Emmy for The Bear, are in discussions to take on the lead roles in Sony’s much-anticipated sequel to The Social Network. The original film, released in 2010, garnered critical acclaim and an Academy Award for its screenplay, penned by the talented Aaron Sorkin, who is also set to direct this new installment.
The upcoming film draws inspiration from a series of articles by Jeff Horwitz published in The Wall Street Journal, known as The Facebook Files. While no official offers have been extended yet, insiders indicate that this project is a major priority for Sony and is progressing rapidly. Sorkin has been actively meeting with potential cast members and is in the process of finalizing a cast and budget, which he will present to the studio for approval.
Meetings with Madison and White have already occurred, and the pieces of the puzzle are slowly falling into place. While the original Social Network focused on the creation of Facebook, now rebranded as Meta, this sequel will delve into the company’s internal reporting and its acknowledgment of the detrimental effects of its social media platform on teenagers and children. The narrative will explore how Facebook was aware of the spread of misinformation, its role in inciting violence, and its contribution to the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, coup attempt.
If negotiations progress successfully, Madison is expected to portray Frances Haugen, the data engineer turned whistleblower who presented crucial information to the Securities and Exchange Commission and The Wall Street Journal. White would take on the role of the former WSJ tech reporter who played a pivotal role in breaking the Facebook files story. One insider compared the project to the 1999 film The Insider, which depicted a whistleblower exposing the tobacco industry, while another noted similarities to Spotlight, the 2015 film about the Boston Globe’s investigation into clerical child abuse.
Sony has not yet commented on the project. The sequel will be produced by Sorkin, along with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. The original Social Network, directed by David Fincher and starring Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, received eight Oscar nominations and won three.
Mikey Madison has received numerous accolades for her work in Anora, including wins at both the BAFTA Awards and the Academy Awards, with the film itself taking home five Oscars, including Best Picture. Madison is also known for her roles in Scream (2022) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). She is slated to begin filming The Masque of the Red Death, a reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale, in early 2026. This horror project, produced by Picturestart and distributed worldwide by A24, is generating considerable buzz. Earlier this year, she was in discussions to star in the Star Wars feature Starfighter, but those talks fell through due to financial reasons.
Jeremy Allen White has also made a name for himself, earning two Emmy Awards for his performance in FX’s The Bear. This fall, he will portray Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming film Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, which chronicles the making of the iconic album Nebraska. This highly anticipated drama is set to hit theaters on October 24.
