Leonardo DiCaprio’s Biggest Regret: Turning Down ‘Boogie Nights’
In a revealing interview with director Paul Thomas Anderson for Esquire, Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio opened up about one significant regret from his illustrious career: declining the role in the iconic 1997 film, Boogie Nights. DiCaprio candidly stated, “My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights. It was a profound movie of my generation.” He expressed admiration for Mark Wahlberg’s performance, saying, “I can’t imagine anyone but Mark in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I thought it was a masterpiece.”
The reason DiCaprio turned down the opportunity was his commitment to Titanic, which was already in the works. Reflecting on his career choices, he shared with GQ in 2008, “I wish I could have done them both,” highlighting the difficulty of choosing between two monumental projects.
Boogie Nights featured Wahlberg as Eddie Adams, a young man who rises to fame in the adult film industry under the guidance of director Jack Horner, portrayed by Burt Reynolds. While DiCaprio and Anderson almost collaborated on this groundbreaking film, their first official project together is the upcoming One Battle After Another.
When Anderson inquired why it took so long for them to finally work together, DiCaprio revealed, “I’ve been wanting to join forces for nearly two decades.” He acknowledged that One Battle After Another had been on Anderson’s desk for a long time, adding, “It was a personal story for you in many ways and certainly relevant to the world we live in today.”
One Battle After Another revolves around a group of former revolutionaries who come together to help their friend Bob Ferguson, played by DiCaprio, in his quest to find his daughter. This highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters on September 26.
