Conan O’Brien Shares Insights on the Future of Television While Accepting Prestigious Award
In a heartfelt acceptance speech at this year’s Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony, comedy legend Conan O’Brien reflected on the current state of television, acknowledging the challenges and uncertainties the industry faces. Speaking to a packed audience at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in downtown LA Live, O’Brien stated, “We’re experiencing a significant transformation in television, and understandably so. The landscape we’ve known for nearly 80 years is shifting dramatically.”
Despite this uncertainty, O’Brien expressed a positive outlook, emphasizing, “I prefer not to dwell on what we’ve lost. At its core, the essence of television remains unchanged. While streaming may alter the delivery methods, the connections, talent, and innovative ideas that enrich our viewing experiences continue to thrive. The evidence is all around us tonight.”
He highlighted the success of recent hit series such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” and “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson,” suggesting that creative opportunities still exist in Hollywood. “These shows are captivating a new generation of viewers,” he said. “While the traditional late-night format as we’ve known it since the 1950s may fade, the talented voices like Stephen Colbert are here to stay.”
Reflecting on his nearly 30-year journey through late-night television, which includes iconic shows like “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien,” and “Conan,” O’Brien quipped, “For those under 40, late-night TV was essentially a distraction for college students until the internet—and, well, online content—came along. They really nailed that.”
O’Brien went on to praise Colbert, noting, “Stephen will undoubtedly evolve and shine in a new format that he fully controls. Technology may transform television in various ways, but the heart of great storytelling and genuine performances remains paramount. If the narratives are compelling and the creators are passionate, the medium will always resonate.”
Regarding the Hall of Fame award, which he shared with esteemed figures like Viola Davis, Henry Winkler, Ryan Murphy, Mike Post, and Don Mischer, O’Brien said, “This is truly the honor of a lifetime. It means everything to me, and I’m in awe to be among such incredible talent. While I may feel unworthy, I’m grateful to accept it. My grandfather always said to seize opportunities and ask for more, and that’s exactly what I intend to do tonight.”
Ryan Murphy, another honoree at the event, addressed the current socio-political climate, expressing concerns about the erosion of rights and freedoms. “I always believed that by fighting for vibrant and diverse voices, we could clear a path for others,” he remarked. “However, I now realize that all the progress we fought for is at risk of being undone. I had long dreamed of being in the Hall of Fame, thinking I could relax and focus on financial success, but a new, darker era has emerged. Therefore, I’m committed to continuing the fight by creating more opportunities for the marginalized and disenfranchised.”
As the television landscape continues to evolve, both O’Brien and Murphy remind us of the importance of creativity, resilience, and the pursuit of meaningful storytelling.
