Kirsten Dunst Eager to Join the Minecraft Movie Franchise Following Record-Breaking Success
Following the astonishing success of A Minecraft Movie, which grossed nearly $995 million globally, Kirsten Dunst has expressed her desire to join the franchise. The Oscar-nominated actress recently shared her enthusiasm for a potential role in Warner Bros.’ upcoming sequel, motivated in part by her children’s love for the original film adaptation of the popular video game. "Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?" Dunst quipped in an interview with Town & Country.
Director Jared Hess has also hinted at the possibility of a sequel, describing it as “so much fun” after the first film’s impressive box office performance in April. This success not only marked Warner Bros.’ third-largest opening of all time, but it also opened up a vast universe within the Minecraft world that the team is eager to explore further. "We had so much fun making this movie, and there are so many aspects of the game that we haven’t tapped into yet," Hess explained. “I would love to dive back into that world, especially since the fans are enjoying it so much. We even teased some exciting developments in the end credits!”
The original film featured notable performances from Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Sebastian Hansen, and it hinted at the introduction of a key character from the game, Alex, in the sequel. Hess confirmed that both Steve (voiced by Jack Black) and Alex will be integral to the storyline. While Kate McKinnon voiced Alex in a brief appearance, her face was not shown, leaving the door open for new casting possibilities in the sequel. This has sparked speculation about Dunst possibly reprising her iconic red-haired character, Mary Jane, from the Spider-Man franchise for a fresh role.
Dunst’s last theatrical release was Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024), which grossed over $127 million worldwide, setting a record for A24 with a $25.7 million opening weekend. With a career that began at age six, Dunst’s highest-grossing film remains Spider-Man 3 (2007), accumulating $892 million globally.
As excitement builds for the Minecraft Movie sequel, fans and Dunst alike are eager to see what adventures lie ahead in this beloved digital universe. Stay tuned for updates on casting and plot developments that promise to captivate audiences once again!
