Kate Hudson’s Journey: Almost Emancipated for Her Hollywood Dreams

Kate Hudson recently shared a fascinating glimpse into her early career, revealing that she once considered becoming emancipated from her famous parents, Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, to boost her opportunities in Hollywood. During the Newport Beach TV Festival, Hudson recounted how she was presented with a small role in an undisclosed project that would require her to "divorce" her parents in order to work as an adult.

In her candid conversation on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast panel, Hudson explained, “I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult. My mom was like, ‘No, never happening,’ but then I got the ‘Party of Five’ and it was so great."

Hudson’s Breakthrough with ‘Party of Five’

The teen drama series "Party of Five," which premiered in 1994, focused on the Salinger siblings navigating life after their parents tragically died in a car accident. Hudson appeared as a guest star in the show’s second season, playing the character Cory. Reflecting on her experience, she recalled, “I was 16 and obsessed with ‘Party of Five,’ so walking onto that set was like a dream come true. I couldn’t believe I was going to have a guest role on it. It was so much fun!”

Despite the early pressures to become emancipated, Hudson ultimately chose to stay with her family. However, her relationship with her father has since become strained. After Hawn and Bill Hudson divorced in 1982, Goldie began dating actor Kurt Russell, who played an integral role in Kate’s upbringing.

Navigating Fame and Family Dynamics

During the event, Hudson revealed that she turned down the chance to star in one of Russell’s films, wanting to carve her own identity away from her parents’ legacy. Goldie Hawn, who starred alongside Russell in the 1987 movie "Overboard," has been supportive of her daughter throughout her career challenges. Last year, she reflected on their relationship during an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s "Let’s Talk Off Camera" podcast, discussing Kate’s frustrations about her parents often being the focal point of interviews.

“I told her, ‘The truth of the matter is we have to embrace each other. Yes, you’re gonna talk about me, and one day I’m going to talk about you. And I’m going to be Katie’s mother, and that could be pretty cool,’” Hawn shared.

A Close-Knit Family

Today, Kate Hudson enjoys a strong bond with her mother. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, she mentioned, “I live seven blocks from my mom now, and she comes over every day.” Their close relationship highlights the importance of family support in navigating the complexities of fame.
