Isla Johnston in Talks to Star as Joan of Arc in Baz Luhrmann’s Upcoming Epic
In an exciting development, director Baz Luhrmann may have found his leading lady for the highly anticipated Warner Bros film Jehanne d’Arc. Sources tell Deadline that Luhrmann is in early discussions with rising star Isla Johnston to portray the iconic Joan of Arc.
Johnston, known for her memorable role as the younger Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, has captured the attention of audiences and critics alike. While Joan of Arc’s story is steeped in tragedy—she was burned at the stake in the 15th century after bravely leading French troops during the Siege of Orleans and advocating for the coronation of Charles VII—her legacy as a patron saint of France continues to resonate.
Luhrmann has been diligently preparing for this film, narrowing down his choices to a select group of talented young actresses before settling on Johnston. The script, co-written by Luhrmann and playwright Ava Pickett, had its first reading recently at the iconic Chateau Marmont, a venue steeped in Hollywood history. Notably, this is the same location where the initial draft of Rebel Without a Cause was presented to Warner Bros executives.
In addition to the script reading, Luhrmann’s design partner, Catherine Martin, supported Pickett with a captivating visual presentation. Isla Johnston has received an official offer for the role, which could be a pivotal moment in her career. She is represented by The Artists Partnership in the UK and UTA, and while Warner Bros has yet to comment, the buzz surrounding this project is palpable.
