HBO Dominates Emmy Nominations with Comic Book Series: What’s Next for Lanterns?
This week, the 77th Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, and HBO proudly boasts the distinction of having the two most-nominated comic book shows in history. But HBO is not resting on its success; network chief Casey Bloys has high hopes for the upcoming DC Universe series, Lanterns, which he believes will also be a strong contender for Emmy recognition.
While many comic book series have hit the screen since the dawn of the 21st century, only a select few have garnered significant awards attention. Notably, Watchmen and The Penguin from DC, along with Marvel’s WandaVision and Prime Video’s The Boys, have stood out, each receiving over 20 nominations in their respective eligibility years.
In a recent conversation with TheWrap, Bloys reflected on HBO and HBO Max’s impressive achievement of securing 142 Emmy nominations across 20 original programs this year. He also expressed excitement about the network’s upcoming offerings, particularly Lanterns, a new superhero drama that promises to capture viewers’ imaginations.
“Knock on wood,” Bloys said, acknowledging his superstitious nature while expressing optimism for Lanterns. “I’m not entirely sure where it falls within the Emmy eligibility window, but I truly believe it has what it takes to be an Emmy contender.”
The anticipation surrounding Lanterns is well-founded, given the exceptional talent involved. Kyle Chandler, known for his outstanding work in Friday Night Lights, co-stars as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, and has received four nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, winning once. Additionally, Damon Lindelof, the creative mind behind the acclaimed Watchmen, serves as a writer and executive producer for Lanterns.
Drawing favorable comparisons to the Emmy-winning True Detective, Lanterns follows Hal Jordan, a legendary member of the Green Lantern space police force, as he mentors a younger Green Lantern, John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). Together, they delve into a dark mystery set in the American heartland, investigating a murder that could change everything.
Set to premiere in early 2026, Lanterns will be a key part of the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. As HBO continues to push the boundaries of storytelling in the comic book genre, fans can look forward to what promises to be another thrilling addition to its lineup.
Stay tuned for more updates on HBO’s Lanterns and its journey towards Emmy glory!
