Exciting Honors at the Toronto Film Festival: Guillermo del Toro and Jodie Foster to Receive TIFF Tribute Awards
Renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster are set to be honored at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Del Toro will receive the prestigious TIFF Ebert Director Award, while Foster is set to accept the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award. The awards ceremony will take place on September 7 during the festival’s annual fundraiser.
Del Toro is bringing his highly anticipated film, "Frankenstein," to Toronto for its North American premiere, following its debut at the Venice Film Festival. The movie is scheduled for a global release on Netflix in November. Jodie Foster will return to the TIFF stage with her compelling performance in Rebecca Zlotowski’s "Private Life," a French psychological mystery that premiered at Cannes.
In addition to these stars, TIFF organizers announced that Japanese writer, director, and producer Hikari will be honored with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award. Hikari’s film, "Rental Family," featuring Brendan Fraser as an American actor in Japan, will also have its world premiere at the festival. Fraser will take on the role of honorary chair for the 2025 Tribute Awards.
South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, known for his role in "Squid Game," will receive a TIFF Special Tribute Award. The festival will host a North American premiere of Park Chan-wook’s "No Other Choice," in which Byung-hun stars.
The proceeds from the Tribute Awards support TIFF’s year-round talent development programs, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the film industry. The gala dinner, held annually at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, not only raises funds for these philanthropic efforts but also often serves as a precursor to potential Oscar nominations.
With more Tribute Award recipients to be announced soon, the 50th Toronto Film Festival is set to take place from September 4 to 14. Don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate the incredible talent shaping the future of cinema!
