Investigation Launched into Tragic Death of Live Streamer in France

Prosecutors in the South of France are currently investigating the death of a 46-year-old man, Raphael Graven, who tragically passed away during a live streaming event that showcased his mistreatment. Known online as Jean Pormanove or JP, Graven had garnered a following by hosting live internet shows where he was subjected to abuse and humiliation.

The incident occurred on Monday in the village of Contes, near Nice, prompting local prosecutors to initiate an investigation to determine the cause of death. An autopsy has been ordered as part of the inquiry.

Reports indicate that the disturbing video of Graven was initially streamed live on an Australian platform called Kick and subsequently circulated widely online. For the past eight months, police in Nice have been investigating alleged "deliberate violent acts" targeting vulnerable individuals, which have been shared as videos across various internet platforms. This investigation was triggered by a report from French news outlet Mediapart, highlighting the existence of such content, which has been viewed by thousands, particularly on Kick.

In response to this tragic incident, a spokesperson for Kick stated that the company is "urgently reviewing the circumstances and engaging with relevant stakeholders" to thoroughly investigate the situation. They expressed condolences to Graven’s family, friends, and community, emphasizing their commitment to protecting creators through their community guidelines.

Sarah El Haïry, France’s High Commissioner for Children, stressed the significant responsibility that online platforms bear in regulating content to ensure that children are not exposed to violent material.

This heartbreaking event has raised critical questions about the safety and ethics of live streaming, particularly regarding the treatment of vulnerable individuals. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover the circumstances surrounding Graven’s death.
