Jamie Lee Curtis Discusses the Challenges of Making ‘Freakier Friday’
Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprises her beloved role as Tess Coleman in the upcoming sequel Freakier Friday, recently shared insights about the unique challenges faced during the film’s production compared to the original. The first Freaky Friday, released in 2003 and starring Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman, became a cultural phenomenon and remains one of the most popular adaptations of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel.
Why ‘Freakier Friday’ Presented New Challenges
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Curtis elaborated on the complexities of portraying Tess in Freakier Friday. She explained that the dynamics of character interaction were more intricate this time around. “Teenagers are really tricky,” the Oscar-winning actress remarked. “In the first Freaky Friday, the distinction between adult and teenager was clear-cut—adults stood tall, while teenagers slouched. This time, the shift is much more subtle, requiring us to explore language, body language, and mannerisms. It’s definitely a more challenging process because it’s not as easy to gauge if you’re getting it right.”
A New Twist on the Classic Story
In the original film, Tess and Anna, a mother-daughter duo, experience life through each other’s eyes when they swap bodies. However, the sequel introduces a fresh twist: Anna swaps bodies with her own daughter, played by Julia Butters, while Tess finds herself in the body of Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter, portrayed by Sophia Hammons.
Curtis drew inspiration from her role as Donna Berzatto in The Bear Season 2 to navigate her character’s transformation into Lily. “With Donna, I was confident in my portrayal because I understood her character deeply. However, with Lily, I had no prior experience, which made it much more challenging to ensure I captured the essence of her character,” she explained.
Meet the Cast
Alongside Curtis, Freakier Friday features a talented ensemble cast, including Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Mark Harmon as Ryan, and Manny Jacinto as Eric Davies. The highly anticipated movie is set to hit U.S. theaters this Friday, promising audiences a blend of humor and heartfelt moments as it explores the complexities of family relationships.
Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting sequel that builds on the charm of the original while tackling new themes of identity and understanding across generations!
