Listen to Fox News Articles: The Rise and Fall of Gregg Zaun in Baseball Broadcasting
After an impressive 16-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB), Gregg Zaun transitioned into broadcasting, where he spent another 12 years sharing his insights with fans. The former Toronto Blue Jays catcher had made a name for himself as an analyst, but his career took a dramatic turn in 2017 when he was dismissed following allegations of sexual harassment from several female colleagues.
In a candid conversation on the "Toronto Legends" podcast, Zaun acknowledged crossing boundaries during his time with Sportsnet in Canada. He admitted, “I definitely made mistakes,” and reflected on how his rise to fame impacted his judgment, stating, “I let celebrity get in my head.”
Zaun, known for his two-run homer against the Cincinnati Reds while playing for the Blue Jays, revealed that his broadcasting fame eclipsed his playing career. He noted, “I was never as famous in Canada as a player as I was as a broadcaster. I mean, I couldn’t walk down the street.” He admitted to engaging in flirtatious behavior with female employees, which he later recognized as inappropriate.
Since then, Zaun has sought to turn his life around by getting sober and attending therapy. However, he expressed frustration about his inability to return to broadcasting, saying, “My life was turned upside down, ruined. My professional career, ruined. I can’t get a job in television.” He lamented the lack of forgiveness for individuals in his position, taking full responsibility for his actions.
Zaun also emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism in the workplace, saying, “There are certain topics of conversation that don’t belong in the workplace.” He reflected on his past misunderstandings, admitting, “The biggest mistake that I’ve made is thinking that because a lot of the conversations were initiated by females, they were somehow OK.”
In the years following his dismissal, Zaun has sought to stay connected to baseball through coaching positions in independent leagues and even in Mexico. Recently, he was let go as an interim manager for a team in the Mexican League.
Throughout his MLB career, Zaun played for multiple teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers. He finished his career with a .252 batting average and a .732 OPS, accumulating a 13.7 WAR.
