Exclusive: New Documentary on Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell Set for Release
In a touching tribute to the legacy of Jim Lovell, the esteemed commander of the Apollo 13 mission, a new documentary titled Odyssey is on the cusp of completion. Lovell, who passed away at the age of 97, was famously portrayed by Tom Hanks in Ron Howard’s critically acclaimed film, which was nominated for Best Picture.
Odyssey, financed by Fifth Season and directed by award-winning filmmaker Avi Belkin, delves into the gripping five days of the Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Utilizing over 2,000 hours of previously unseen archival footage, the documentary offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by Lovell and his family during this historic mission, as well as the remarkable international cooperation that played a vital role in ensuring the astronauts’ safe return.
With the full support of the Lovell family, the filmmakers aim to highlight this lesser-known aspect of the Apollo 13 story. Originally intended to be the third manned mission to land on the moon, Apollo 13 faced a life-threatening crisis when an oxygen tank exploded, damaging crucial electrical and life support systems. This incident turned the mission into a desperate struggle for survival, as the crew fought to safely re-enter Earth’s atmosphere.
Currently in post-production, Odyssey is set to launch sales this fall through CAA and Fifth Media. This powerful documentary promises to honor Jim Lovell’s legacy while providing viewers with an intimate look at one of NASA’s most dramatic missions. Stay tuned for more updates on this remarkable film!
