Weekend Box Office Update: Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps Leads International Sales
This weekend at the global box office was bustling with activity, primarily driven by the second weekend performance of Marvel and Disney’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Despite experiencing a 54% drop in ticket sales from its opening weekend (a 52% decline when excluding China), the film managed to rake in an additional $39.6 million internationally. This brings its total overseas earnings to $170.3 million and a worldwide gross of $368.7 million. While domestic and international earnings were nearly equal for the weekend, the domestic market still holds a significant lead, contributing 54% to the film’s global total. This is somewhat unusual, as we often see the opposite trend, particularly when considering the Asian markets.
Speaking of Asia, South Korea is currently showcasing a strong local film alongside a notable interest in the Brad Pitt-starring racing film F1. Produced by Apple Original Films and distributed by Warner Bros, F1 has demonstrated remarkable staying power, seeing a 36% increase in its sixth weekend in the market. The movie added $17.2 million across 78 international markets this weekend, resulting in an overall overseas total of $372.3 million. With a global box office of $545.6 million, F1 has now become Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous record set by World War Z.
In addition to these major titles, there were several noteworthy releases this weekend. Paramount’s comedy The Naked Gun debuted with an impressive $11.5 million from 46 early-opening markets, outperforming both Game Night and The Heat by 44% and 36%, respectively. This launch represents 73% of its international footprint, with 15 additional markets still to come, including France, Brazil, Australia, and Spain. The top-performing markets for The Naked Gun include the UK and Germany, each contributing $2.3 million, followed by Mexico ($674K), the Netherlands ($590K), and Austria ($430K).
Meanwhile, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 expanded its reach this weekend, moving from three markets last weekend to 58 this time around. The film earned $16.3 million, bringing its early overseas total to $22.3 million, with a combined global total of $44.5 million when factoring in its domestic debut. Significant markets still forthcoming include Brazil, China, Italy, Germany, and Australia, among others.
In the realm of blockbusters, Universal/Amblin’s Jurassic World Rebirth secured another $16.2 million in its fifth overseas weekend, marking a 35% decline from the previous weekend. This brings its overseas total to $448.4 million and a global gross of $766 million. Additionally, Warner/DC’s Superman added $11.2 million from 78 international markets, resulting in a cumulative overseas total of $235 million and a global total of $551.2 million.
