The Dallas Cowboys remain one of the most discussed sports franchises in the United States, but former sports columnist and seasoned TV commentator Michael Wilbon believes it’s time to dial down the hype surrounding "America’s Team."

In the early 1990s, the Cowboys experienced their glory days, clinching three Super Bowl titles and solidifying their status as a beloved national team. They also claimed two championships in the 1970s, featuring a lineup filled with legendary athletes. However, since their last Super Bowl victory in the 1995 season, the team’s success has dwindled, with no appearances in a conference championship game since then.

Despite the lack of recent on-field triumphs, the national media continues to spotlight the Cowboys. On a recent episode of "Pardon the Interruption," Wilbon expressed his view that the Cowboys lose relevance once January rolls around. He stated, “The Cowboys aren’t in the big action late,” referring to the team’s long-time owner, Jerry Jones. Wilbon added, “So, he could be hurting his team while he’s doing it. I don’t care about that because I don’t care about the Cowboys, even though I know most of the programming on this network is devoted to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.”

Wilbon further emphasized his indifference toward Jones’s frequent press conferences. "There’s nothing Jerry Jones says that I pay any attention to. Nothing," he remarked. He described the effort to interpret Jones’s comments as a "waste of time," suggesting that Jones enjoys the spotlight of media interactions.

While the Cowboys have not returned to their former glory on the field in nearly three decades, they have achieved remarkable success off the field. In 2024, Forbes estimated the Cowboys’ worth at an impressive $10.1 billion, making them the most valuable sports team globally.

Currently, Jones is navigating a high-profile contract negotiation with Micah Parsons’s representatives, as he considers a long-term deal that could potentially make Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Recently, fans at training camp chanted "re-sign Parsons," a sentiment that Jones acknowledged, comparing it to the previous year’s "Pay Lamb" chants directed at star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

As the Cowboys wrapped up last season with a 7-10 record, the anticipation for the upcoming season remains high among fans.
