Michael Jackman Joins Forces for "Black Tuesday": A Gripping Disaster Thriller on the 1929 Stock Market Crash
Renowned BAFTA-winning producer Michael Jackman, known for his work on “Conclave,” is set to produce “Black Tuesday,” an electrifying 100-minute disaster thriller that delves into the harrowing events surrounding the largest stock market crash in history. This film takes inspiration from the true story of the catastrophic 1929 stock market crash, which ultimately plunged the United States and the world into the Great Depression.
The narrative centers around Dick Whitney, the newly appointed acting president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). As the stock market teeters on the brink of collapse, Whitney races against time to orchestrate a financial rescue package aimed at averting disaster and safeguarding the global economy. However, his personal struggles and disastrous investments lead him into conflict with his brother George, a pivotal figure and gatekeeper to J.P. Morgan, whose influence is crucial in preventing the impending crisis.
“Black Tuesday” marks the return of director Daniel Ragussis, acclaimed for his previous work on “Imperium,” featuring stars like Daniel Radcliffe and Toni Collette. The compelling script is co-written by Ragussis and R.F.I. Porto, known for his work on “Blue Caprice” and “The Yellow Birds.” Additionally, casting director Susan Shopmaker, recognized for her contributions to “The Holdovers,” “The Iron Claw,” and “Sound of Metal,” will bring the film’s characters to life.
Commenting on the project, Jackman expressed his excitement: “I have known Dan for over twenty years and have been eagerly looking for an opportunity to collaborate with him. The screenplay for ‘Black Tuesday’ is riveting, featuring fascinating, complex characters, and drawing intriguing parallels to our current financial system a century later. It’s compelling and superbly written, unveiling the hidden machinations of a pivotal moment in history that we all think we understand. It captivated me much like ‘Conclave’ did when I first read it—a thriller of the highest quality.”
“Black Tuesday” is the inaugural project to enter pre-production from the recently announced Atomic Features development fund, further showcasing the company’s commitment to exceptional storytelling. The film will be co-produced by Atomic Features, with executive producers including Fanghua Jiang of San Demetrio Arte, along with Li Jing and Ricky Russert.
