The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off their 2025 NFL preseason with an impressive victory over the Detroit Lions, dominating the Hall of Fame Game with a score of 34-7. This exciting matchup took place in Canton, Ohio, where the league celebrated the newest inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Highlighting the evening was Trey Lance, the third overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, who showcased his skills for the Chargers. While starting quarterback Justin Herbert sat out as is typical for this early in the season, Lance seized the opportunity to compete for the backup role and certainly caught the eye of head coach Jim Harbaugh with his stellar performance.
After the Lions fumbled the opening kickoff, Lance quickly went to work. He orchestrated a five-play drive that covered 28 yards, culminating in a 4th-and-2 touchdown pass to Will Dissly, marking the Chargers’ first touchdown of the season. Lance continued to shine, connecting with rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a slant pass that resulted in another touchdown, extending the lead to 21-7 in the first half.
The Chargers’ defense also made its mark. Rookie cornerback Nikko Reed intercepted Lions quarterback Kyle Allen, nearly scoring on the return. Just two plays later, running back Kimani Vidal punched it in for another touchdown.
Lance played well into the second half, leading the Chargers to two field goals and further extending their lead. He concluded the game with an impressive 12 completions on 20 attempts for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
On the flip side, Allen, who is vying for the backup position behind Jared Goff, struggled in his preseason debut. He completed 9 of 14 passes for 91 yards but threw two interceptions, with the second one stalling a promising drive. Veteran running back Craig Reynolds managed to score a touchdown on one of his 10 carries, while rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa contributed with two catches for 46 yards.
Mistakes are common in the NFL’s preseason opener, but head coach Dan Campbell will likely be disappointed with the special teams, as they had another fumble following the kickoff. Jakobie Keeney-James struggled with a high punt from JK Scott and fumbled, allowing the Chargers to recover. Fortunately for the Lions, their defense stood strong, preventing a touchdown despite the Chargers starting at the five-yard line.
Overall, the Chargers established a solid foundation to build upon as training camp progresses through August.
