Canadian Prime Minister Proposes Troop Deployment to Support Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia
In a significant development, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has voiced strong support for Ukraine’s demand for security guarantees in any prospective peace agreement with Russia. This includes the potential deployment of troops from allied nations to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. Carney made these remarks during a recent visit to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During the visit, Carney highlighted the collaborative efforts of a coalition of Ukraine’s Western allies, dubbed the "Coalition of the Willing," which is working alongside the United States to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities. He emphasized that relying solely on the strength of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for security is unrealistic: “We need to reinforce and support their efforts,” Carney stated during a press conference.
The Prime Minister mentioned that discussions are ongoing with the Coalition of the Willing and Ukraine to establish comprehensive security guarantees across land, air, and sea, noting that the presence of troops is not off the table.
As the war continues, with three and a half years having passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the urgency for a peaceful resolution remains paramount. U.S. President Donald Trump is actively leading initiatives to seek an end to the conflict, while Kyiv is engaging with European allies to secure long-term guarantees against potential Russian aggression.
During the visit, Carney and Zelenskyy participated in a ceremony marking Ukrainian Independence Day in central Kyiv, which was also attended by Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg. President Zelenskyy addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of establishing robust security guarantees as part of any peace deal, ideally aligning closely with NATO’s Article 5, which stipulates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
In addition to discussions on security, Carney and Zelenskyy signed an agreement to collaborate on drone production, with Canada poised to provide over $1 billion CAD (approximately $723 million USD) in military aid to Ukraine from a previously announced package set to be delivered next month.
Carney reiterated the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities, advocating for a ceasefire to halt the ongoing violence. “We need to stop the killing. A truce or armistice is essential,” he urged.
Despite the grim backdrop of the war, which has resulted in significant loss of life, the prospects for an immediate ceasefire appear bleak, as Kyiv and Moscow continue to engage in hostilities. On the same day, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on a nuclear power plant in Kursk, while local sources reported a Russian drone strike that tragically killed a 47-year-old woman in Dnipropetrovsk.
Following a recent push by Trump for a Ukraine-Russia summit, hopes for peace were further dampened when Russia dismissed the possibility of an imminent meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy. However, Zelenskyy reaffirmed his belief that direct dialogue between the leaders remains the most effective path forward, renewing calls for a bilateral summit.
In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized European leaders for allegedly hindering diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, asserting, “We want peace in Ukraine. President Trump also seeks peace, but the actions of European representatives suggest otherwise.”
