Rental Family to Premiere at the 69th BFI London Film Festival
Get ready for the U.K. premiere of Searchlight Pictures’ highly anticipated film, Rental Family, at the 69th BFI London Film Festival, taking place from October 8 to 19, 2025, in partnership with American Express. The gala screening is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, and will feature the film’s talented director Hikari, known for 37 Seconds and Beef, alongside Oscar-winning star Brendan Fraser.
Rental Family is both directed and co-written by Hikari and features an impressive cast including Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Mahina Gorman, and Akira Emoto. Set against the vibrant backdrop of modern-day Tokyo, the film tells the story of an American actor, portrayed by Fraser, who grapples with his sense of purpose. His life takes an unexpected turn when he begins working for a unique "rental family" agency, where he takes on stand-in roles for various clients. As he immerses himself in their lives, he forms authentic connections that challenge the boundaries between performance and reality. The film beautifully explores the moral complexities of his job, leading him to rediscover his sense of belonging and the profound beauty of human connection.
Scheduled for a theatrical release in the U.K. in January 2026, Rental Family is produced by Eddie Vaisman, Julie Lebedev, Hikari, and Shin Yamaguchi.
