In recent years, J.K. Rowling, the renowned author of the Harry Potter series, has faced significant backlash for her views on transgender rights. In a notable response, The Booksmith, an independent bookstore located in San Francisco’s vibrant Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, has taken a stand. The store recently shared on its website that Rowling is utilizing her wealth from the Harry Potter franchise to fund the “JK Rowling Women’s Fund,” an organization aimed at diminishing transgender rights in various areas, including the workplace and public spaces.
In light of this, The Booksmith’s owners have made the bold decision to remove all of Rowling’s works from their shelves. They expressed their feelings in a heartfelt statement, saying, “As a collective of queer booksellers, we were also influenced by the magical worlds of wizards and elves during our formative years. If you, or someone you care about, still wishes to explore the Harry Potter universe, we encourage you to seek out used copies of these books instead.”
This decision is a reflection of the ongoing controversies surrounding Rowling’s activism and opinions. Recently, actor Pedro Pascal also voiced his disapproval of Rowling’s reaction to an anti-trans ruling by the UK Supreme Court, labeling her comments as “awful” and “heinous.”
If you’re interested in supporting bookstores that champion inclusivity and diversity, consider visiting The Booksmith or similar independent retailers in your area. Together, we can create a more accepting literary community.
