Billy Joel Shuts Down Motorcycle Shop and Auctioning Personal Collection Amid Health Struggles
Billy Joel, the iconic singer-songwriter, has announced the closure of his motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, located in Oyster Bay, Long Island. This decision comes as he faces health challenges due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder that affects his vision, hearing, and balance.
At 76 years old, Joel revealed his diagnosis in May, explaining on social media that his condition had worsened after recent concert performances. As a result, he has canceled all tour dates through July 2026 and is undergoing physical therapy as advised by his doctors.
Claire Mercuri, a representative for Joel, confirmed to The Associated Press that the motorcycle shop will officially close its doors in late September. The legendary musician plans to auction off his personal collection of motorcycles later this year, a bittersweet farewell to a passion he has cherished for decades.
Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, which can lead to increased pressure on the brain. It primarily affects individuals over the age of 65. Treatment often requires surgery to insert a shunt that helps drain excess fluid, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic.
In his heartfelt statement, Joel emphasized the impact of NPH on his daily life and his commitment to recovery. He stated, "Under my doctor’s instructions, I am undergoing specific physical therapy and have been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period."
The Legacy of 20th Century Cycles
Joel’s motorcycle shop, established in 2010, was more than just a business; it was a labor of love. It served as a hub for motorcycle enthusiasts and featured a stunning collection of over 75 bikes, including vintage Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, and Ducatis. In a 2013 YouTube video, Joel expressed his desire to promote the aesthetic of classic motorcycles from the 1930s to the 1960s, stating, "I wanted to collect a whole bunch of those kinds of bikes, put ’em in one place, and let people see what that era of bike looked like."
The shop became a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, contributing to the charm of downtown Oyster Bay. In recognition of his contributions to the community, a street in the area was renamed "Billy Joel Way" in 2023.
A Passion for Motorcycles
Joel’s love affair with motorcycles spans decades. In 1982, he suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident when a car ran a red light, leading to a month-long hospital stay. Despite the challenges, he has continued to ride for various charitable causes, including benefits for 9/11 first responders and breast cancer awareness.
As he prepares to part with his motorcycle collection, the date for the auction has yet to be announced. Joel’s fans and motorcycle enthusiasts alike are eager to see what treasures will be available as he embarks on this new chapter in his life.
