Australia Rugby Legend Morgan Turinui Criticizes Refereeing in Wallabies’ Narrow Loss to British and Irish Lions

In a thrilling showdown on Saturday, Australia rugby icon Morgan Turinui expressed his frustration with the officiating during the Wallabies’ 29-26 defeat to the British and Irish Lions. The match saw Australia striving to level the series after a loss in the first test last weekend, but despite leading 23-5 at one point, they succumbed to a remarkable comeback from the Lions.

The controversy erupted just before Hugo Keenan’s pivotal late try, when Jac Morgan collided with Australia’s Carlo Tizzano, impacting his back just below the neck. Tizzano fell to the ground, clutching his head, yet the try was permitted to stand. Turinui did not hold back in his criticism, stating that the referees were "too weak" to overturn the decision.

"It was an easy call. You can’t hit a player in the neck," Turinui asserted. He added, "The end result should have been a penalty for the Wallabies. The referees lacked the strength to make the right call. You cannot hit a player in the back of the neck to prevent a legal play."

Turinui emphasized that this decision had significant repercussions, costing the Wallabies their chance to stay alive in the series, which the Lions now lead 2-0. "It was a brave comeback from the Lions, but the decision to allow that try was poor," he lamented.

Australia’s head coach, Joe Schmidt, echoed Turinui’s sentiments, revealing that the players were "angry" after the match, particularly given their improved performance. "The players are gutted. They’re angry, and I need to let that emotion settle," he told Sky Sports. "We travel to Sydney tomorrow and have a day to recover because they gave everything tonight."

Schmidt praised his team for their resilience, noting, "There’s always pride in pulling on the jersey. We wanted to head into the third Test in Sydney with a chance, and we were right there until the end." He continued, “It’s tough to take. We led for 79 minutes and then faced a decision at the end that left us feeling pretty forlorn. Nonetheless, I’m incredibly proud of the players for their response after last week’s result."

As the Wallabies prepare for the final Test against the Lions next Saturday at 11 am, the focus will be on whether they can avoid a series whitewash with a 3-0 defeat.
