Clark Credle: A Journey from Adversity to Inspiration in Hollywood
Clark Credle, an accomplished assistant director, has been living the legacy of his great-grandfather, William Beaudine, a celebrated figure in early Hollywood. However, on his 40th birthday in 2017, Credle faced a life-altering challenge when he suffered a severe stroke. His life changed dramatically that day, but his journey of resilience and recovery has become an inspiring story for many.
“Every time I see Clark, I remind him what a miracle he is,” says longtime friend Marc Adelman in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Most people wouldn’t have survived what he’s gone through, let alone thrive and contribute as a devoted father and husband.” Assistant director Sunday Stevens adds, “He is a living, breathing miracle.”
Credle’s documentary, The First Family of Film, not only chronicles his personal journey but also highlights his remarkable heritage. William Beaudine was one of the most prolific directors in the history of cinema, with a career spanning from 1909 to 1967. During his lifetime, he directed approximately 350 films and countless television episodes, including the iconic series Lassie. His legacy continued with his son, William (Bill) Beaudine, Jr., who also made significant contributions to the film industry.
The Beaudine family’s rich history in Hollywood set the stage for the Credle family. Gary Credle, an assistant director introduced to the film industry by William Beaudine, Jr., married Kathy Beaudine, William’s daughter. Together, they raised three sons—Matt, Beau, and Clark—who were all influenced by their family’s cinematic background. While his brothers pursued careers in camera operation, Clark chose to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps as an assistant director.
At the pinnacle of his career, Clark Credle worked on blockbuster films such as Argo, American Sniper, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series, as well as the hit TV show Shameless. Just a day before his stroke, Clark expressed to his wife, Katie, that he had finally reached his career aspirations. However, following the stroke, he faced daunting challenges, including losing his ability to speak for a year and relying on a wheelchair for mobility. This experience also created a barrier between him and his three young daughters, isolating him from his family.
Despite these obstacles, the film community rallied around Clark to support his recovery journey. “No traumatic brain injury can stop Clark from being the man he is—a devoted husband, father, and natural-born storyteller,” says actor Colin Farrell, who met Credle while working on Saving Mr. Banks and appears in the documentary alongside Jerry O’Connell. “He’s still pursuing his dreams daily, his spirit undiminished.”
Prominent figures in the industry, including Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, have praised Clark’s tenacity. “Clark is one of the great ADs of our industry. I’ve witnessed his transformation into a director and visionary who refuses to let his struggles hold him back.”
Today, Clark has made remarkable strides in both his speech and mobility, regaining his cognitive abilities despite the lingering effects of his stroke. However, he and Katie continue to face the unspoken challenges that accompany such a life-altering event. “It’s intimidating for some people because what happened to Clark could happen to anyone, and that’s a scary thought,” Katie shares. Clark adds, “Being spoken down to is frustrating.”
After relocating to Colorado for improved medical support, Clark is eager to return to the film industry and provide for his family. He is currently working on a heartfelt documentary that he considers a "labor of love." “It’s a project I’m incredibly proud of,” he says.
When asked whether Hollywood still feels like family to him, Clark’s response is immediate: “Always.” He is preparing for his final trip to Los Angeles to complete The First Family of Film and intends to present the finished documentary to platforms like HBO, Showtime, Amazon, and Netflix.
