Alyson Stoner: Advocating for Kids’ Mental Health in Hollywood and Beyond

Alyson Stoner, a former child star known for her roles on Disney Channel, is turning her childhood struggles into a powerful mission to support the mental health of young performers. Recently, Stoner shared insights about her role as an on-set mental health coordinator, a position she hopes will become mainstream, similar to that of intimacy coordinators. She emphasizes that mental health resources are essential not just for young actors in Hollywood but also for children navigating the online world.

Having started her acting career at just eight years old, Stoner revealed to The Guardian that she reached a point where she could no longer connect with her emotions, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of alexithymia—a condition that makes it difficult to identify and express feelings. Stoner attributes this challenge to the pressures of auditions and the guidance of adults who often relied on outdated acting manuals. She describes child stardom as a “toddler to train-wreck pipeline,” highlighting the need for better support systems for young talent.

In her new memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything, Stoner aims to shed light on her experiences in the entertainment industry. “My focus isn’t on blaming specific individuals but rather empowering people with knowledge,” she explains. “I believe that once we understand more, we can make better choices—especially for our children.”

Alyson Stoner first captured audiences as the co-host of Disney Channel’s Mike’s Super Short Show in 2001. Since then, she has appeared in beloved series such as The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and That’s So Raven, as well as in popular films like Cheaper by the Dozen and Camp Rock. Beyond her Disney roots, Stoner has made notable appearances in Drake & Josh, the Step Up franchise, and multiple Missy Elliott music videos.

By sharing her story and advocating for mental health, Alyson Stoner is not only healing her own past but also paving the way for healthier futures for young performers everywhere.
