Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently expressed his support for Auburn Tigers men’s basketball head coach Bruce Pearl, should Pearl decide to enter the race for the U.S. Senate. While Barkley appreciates Pearl’s contributions to the team over the past 11 years, he also understands the potential for a political career.
In an interview with AL.com, Barkley stated, "I respect and trust him. I just told him to do what he wants to do. Obviously, he’s made Auburn basketball relevant, which makes me happy. As much as I love you being the head basketball coach at Auburn, you taking Auburn to two Final Fours is something I never thought would happen, but I do understand."
Barkley emphasized his unwavering support, saying, "If he wants to run, I’m gonna support him 100%." The Alabama Senate seat is expected to open up when Tommy Tuberville runs for governor, although Pearl has not yet confirmed his intentions regarding a campaign. However, his political standing has been gaining traction over the past two years.
In light of recent events, including the rise of antisemitism following the October 7 attacks in Israel, Pearl, who is Jewish, has been vocal about his support for Israel and has praised former President Donald Trump’s handling of Middle Eastern affairs. He was also appointed chairman of the U.S. Israel Education Association.
Despite his endorsement of Trump, Barkley reassured fans that this political lean would not affect his support for Pearl. However, he acknowledged that Pearl’s departure from coaching could negatively impact the Auburn program.
As the head coach of the Tigers, Bruce Pearl has an impressive record of 246 wins and 125 losses, leading the team to two Final Four appearances, including a memorable run last season.
